National Caesar Day takes place on Thursday, May 16 and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Caesar. The drink is attributed to bartender Walter Chell from his time behind the pine at the Calgary Inn. Here are a few places in Vancouver that are offering special Caesar creations.
Fairmont Vancouver Airport
Jetside Bar at Fairmont Vancouver Airport is featuring a Lemon Beer Caesar with local lemon pale ale from Four Winds Brewing in Delta, BC, Absolute vodka, Grand Marnier, lemon juice and Mott’s Caesar mix. And the garnish? Fresh dill and smoked salmon. Offered only for National Caesar Day at $16 each.
Fairmont Hotel Vancouver
The Notch8 drink includes a chorizo and roast garlic calzone as a nod to its Italian lineage, and a deep-fried clam “po’boy” smothered in tomato sauce to reflect Chell’s love of spaghetti vongole.
The mixologists took inspiration from the cowboys and cattle of the Rockies and included two smokey BBQ pork sliders, two Alberta Beef prime rib-stuffed Yorkshire puddings and two fried chicken skewers to the cocktail.
And to reflect the West Coast and provide local flavor, two BC grilled prawn skewers were added. Garnishes provide crunch with a skewer of pickled vegetables and celery sticks to illustrate the evolution of the Caesar over the decades. The three ounces of vodka is mixed with Mott’s Clamato juice and topped with lime wedges.
Only offered on National Caesar Day in Notch8, the cocktail is $99.
Juke Fried Chicken
Juke Fried Chicken is featuring the Juke Caesar, which blends its housemade Juke Caesar mix (a blend of Thai basil, cilantro, pickled chilies, lime juice and maple syrup) with vodka, lemon juice, Clamato and a couple dashes of hot sauce and is topped with a lime, Thai basil and a chicharron for a spicy-sweet Caesar.
BOULEVARD KITCHEN & OYSTER BAR
At Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar, Bar Manager Gavin Hobbs shakes up an inspired twist on the traditional Caesar called the El Padrone. The drink features Casamigos tequila blanco with a Clamato-inspired housemade tomatillo juice comprising fresh tomatillo, cilantro, habanero and serrano chilis, cucumber, clam nectar, agave and fish sauce for a green-hued Caesar accented with a fresh prawn-olive-pepperoncini garnish.
TACOFINO (various locations)
Available at all five of Tacofino’s five brick-and-mortar locations in Vancouver, the El Cesar features housemade clamato juice, jalapeño-infused Cazadores blanco tequila, cilantro salt rim and a garnish of lime and smoked olives. Tacofino’s hot little number can also be made into a Michelada with the addition of Good Company lager.
TUC CRAFT KITCHEN
Tuc Craft Kitchen is offering the Mezcal Caesar that blends Montelobos mezcal, El Espolòn reposado tequila, Classic spice Walter Craft Caesar mix and a housemade tomato shrub (tomatoes, fire-roasted jalapeños, cilantro, coriander seed, apple cider vinegar, salt and brown sugar) with dashes of Tabasco and Addition Thai Green Chili bitters for an extra kick of spice.
