This past summer, a new dessert cafe opened up in the Marpole area. Y & Y Dessert serves hot and cold dessert soups as well as fresh fruit dessert beverages. I had passed by them a few times and became curious enough to want to try out their menu. In the last few months, I have visited Y & Y Dessert twice.
Y & Y Dessert Menu
Y & Y Dessert is located in the same area as other dessert and bubble tea places, Doolami and Mr. Mustache. Similarly, Y & Y offers hot and cold desserts which you can customize with a variety of toppings, waffles, noodle soups, and bubble tea. One thing about them is that they have quite a nice selection of fresh fruit-based desserts including mango and durian.
For their shaved ice, their syrup is made with organic cane sugar. Topping choice are plentiful and include red bean, taro, pearl, mango, strawberry and more.
Small, Clean Modern Cafe
The interior of Y & Y is small, cozy and modern. There are a few dining tables for two or four people. I found the place to be pretty clean particularly the table surfaces. My only gripe was the washroom where the toilet was a bit grimy and needed scrubbing. They also have a few games like Jenga and Chinese chess for customers to use.
One thing to note is that Y & Y seems committed to a high quality of service. Each table is fitted with a service call button in case you needed attention during your meal. There is also a mini sign with a phone number of contact if you have any issues.
What We Tried
My family and I visited Y & Y twice for some post-dinner desserts. The first time, we had a shaved ice with 8 toppings ($11.95). The toppings we chose were red bean, taro, grass jelly, durian, mango, pearl, taro ball and rice ball. It was nicely presented with the different toppings grouped together. The mango and durian tasted fresh and the mango wasn’t too tart. All in all, decent quality toppings were given for the shaved ice.
On our second visit to Y & Y this past weekend, we had a large Busy Mango Cup ($7.95) which had mango chunks, whipped cream and sago. Given that mangos are out of season, it was a concern that the mangos would be tart. However, this wasn’t the case. The mangos were very sweet on their own. I liked how they chose quality mangos rather than masking tart mangos with sweeteners. The Busy Mango Cup was very refreshing.
Overall Impression of Y & Y
While Y & Y isn’t as strong as other dessert places in terms of branding and social media presence, I found that their desserts do deliver on quality and taste. I’d recommend giving them a try and look forward to returning again myself sometime again. Rating: 4/5
