Wang’s Taiwan Beef Noodle House in Marpole

Wang’s Taiwan Beef Noodle House has been one of the long standing restaurants in the Marpole area.  Located at Granville and West 68th, Wang’s serves customers 7 days a week from morning till late night (9 am – 11 pm).  They also have a second location near Cambie and 16th.  When the weather cooled off this week, I decided to give their Marpole location a try as I was in the mood for something hearty.

First Impressions

As soon as I walked in the door, my first impressions were that Wang’s was the kind of place where service wasn’t going to be much and that cleanliness could be an issue.  Most noticeably were some parts of the floor which appeared a bit dirty.

Wang’s Menu

On the menu are a variety of noodle, rice, dim sum, and appetizers/snacks.  Zomato has photos of their menu but prices are outdated.  It was Happy Hour when my husband and I visited and they have a special deal where you can enjoy a black tea or green tea-based drink for $2.95 with order of a noodle or rice dish.  With noodle dishes, you can choose your type of noodle: thick, thin, vermicelli, or rice noodle.  They accept cash only.

What We Tried

We went with some conservative choices for our meal:

  • Large beef brisket noodle ($10.75)
  • Large spicy beef brisket noodle ($11.75)
  • Passionfruit green tea ($2.95)

Both noodle bowls came with five meaty chunks of beef brisket which were scrumptiously tender.  Soups were hearty and flavourful with the spicy one being satisfyingly spicy.

We had thin noodles in the regular beef brisket noodle and thick noodles in the spicy beef brisket.  The amounts of noodles were greater than expected with probably two servings given.  The ramen noodles I get at the popular ramen eateries in Downtown Vancouver pales in comparison to the noodle portions at Wang’s.  The thick noodles were wide and al dente; they appeared to be handmade.  The thin noodles were softer but still a bit chewy.

The passionfruit green tea was just okay.  It tasted a bit on the artificial side and it was reasonably sweet.

Overall Impression

All in all, I had a solid first time experience with Wang’s beef noodle soups.  Service isn’t much and neither is the decor, but I’m definitely interested in trying out their other offerings.  Rating: 3.5/5
