Sweet Capone’s Italian Bakery in Lacombe, AB

One of the sweet stops on our trip to Alberta last month was Sweet Capone’s‘ – a family-owned and operated Italian bakery in Lacombe.  Their desserts are based on generation-old family recipes that have been handed down.  Sweet Capone’s came highly recommended from one of the staff at Troubled Monk Brewery, so we decided to try out some of their treats after brunch at Cilantro & Chives.

The bakery smells absolutely amazing and you could smell it from outside.  The interior has a boutique sort of feel with dark wood tones and brocade wallpaper.  The space is inviting and makes for a great place to enjoy coffee and desserts with others.

The display case had a tantalizing display of Italian pastries and treats like cannoli, tiramisu, florentines and more.

Sweet Capone’s specializes in cannolis so I had to try one.  There are a variety of flavours including vanilla custard cream, double chocolate, toasted coconut, strawberry cream, salted caramel and more.  We went with the pistachio flavour which was nicely nutty and the pastry shell was tender and flaky.  The filling was wonderfully smooth, creamy, fresh and not too sweet.  Apparently, their cannolis are made with higher fat cream than norm.

Another item we tried and which seems to be a popular one at Sweet Capone’s is the Pesche Dolci.  It’s an Italian treat that looks like a peach.  The Pesche Dolci is made by sandwiching peach flavoured cookies with a layer of crema pasticcera (flavoured custard) and then rolled in sugar and liquor.  I found it to be a bit too decadent for my liking from the sugar coating but I appreciated the soft, fluffy texture.

Overall Impression of Sweet Capone’s

Sweet Capone’s makes for a sweet stop in Central Alberta.  I enjoyed their cannoli and would love to try more flavours.  Rating: 3.5/5
