Kurotaki Chabann Vancouver | Ji Box’ Chicken [Review]

Newly opened in Downtown Vancouver is Kurotaki Chabann which is co-located with Ji Box’ Chicken.

The bubble tea and fried chicken dual concept is located at 496 Drake Street.

Kurotaki Chabann 黑泷太郎 is a newer bubble tea brand founded in 2014 in Southern China with around 400 outposts in China.

Signage had gone up for this bubble tea house/eatery one year ago at Drake & Smithe but they finally opened a month ago.

The trendy, modern, bright space features lounge and booth seating and makes for a cool spot to get together with friends over BBT and fried food.  Also family friendly with high chairs available.

On the Kurotaki Chabann menu are Flavoured Milk Tea; Fresh Fruit Teas; Cheese Cream Fresh Teas; Crème Brulee drinks; Soda Fruit Drinks and Brown Sugar Milk Series.  Drinks are around $5.50 – $8.50.

The Ji Box’ Chicken menu features fried foods (chicken, shrimp, beef, oysters, scallops, salmon fillets and more); burgers; wraps; and dessert waffles (like chocolate waffle, matcha red bean and so forth).

We tried the Black Diamond Milk Tea; Mango Pomelo Sago; Fried Snack Combo (popcorn chicken, chicken wings, fried shrimps) with tartar sauce; the Bubble Sugar Waffle and Kid’s Meal (mini salmon fillet burger, fries, fresh fruit, crème brulee, drink).

The food and drinks were OK perhaps on the pricier side for food and drinks that were average quality.

The snack combo was a great way to sample some of their offerings.

The Salmon Wrap was just in a regular tortilla wrap that would be offered at any fast food place.

The waffle could have been a bit crisper because it pretty soft and soggy quickly with the pearls and ice cream on top. Perhaps they could improve the recipe.

Even though I dined-in, they gave me packaged compostable cutlery which I thought was a bit weird because those are usually reserved for takeout.

Overall, a trendy place to hang out with friends with reasonably tasting food but perhaps pricier for what you get.
