Pine State Biscuits is a Portland institution, representing the perfect blend of Southern tradition and Pacific Northwest charm.
The story of Pine State Biscuits began in 2006 when three North Carolina natives—Kevin Atchley, Walt Alexander, and Brian Snyder—decided to bring a taste of their Southern roots to Portland. With a deep love for the biscuits they grew up with, they saw an opportunity to introduce the city to the kind of comfort food that was hard to find in the area.
Starting as a small farmers’ market stand, Pine State Biscuits quickly gained a loyal following thanks to their commitment to quality ingredients and Southern flavors. Their biscuits, which are made from scratch daily, became an instant hit, drawing long lines of eager customers. The popularity of their biscuits, paired with delicious spreads, sauces and toppings, allowed them to expand from their humble beginnings into several brick-and-mortar locations around Portland.
The menu at Pine State Biscuits features Biscuit Sandwiches (which come with combinations of Fried Chicken, bacon, apple butter, house smoked pulled pork and more); Biscuits N Gravy (which are smothered in house made sausage gravy, shiitake mushroom gravy and so forth); Biscuits N Spreads (with options like local honey, house pimento cheese and more); and a variety of comforting sides (like Fried Mac N Cheese, Fried Green Tomatoes, and so forth).
You need to order food at the counter and bus your own table.
Here’s a look at what we ordered at their Division location at 1100 SE Division St #100.
The Reggie Deluxe is the ultimate comfort sandwich, combining fried chicken, bacon, Tillamook cheddar, and gravy on a buttery biscuit, with an egg on top for good measure. It’s indulgent, satisfying, and worth every calorie.
The triple stack of made-from-scratch Blueberry Cornmeal Pancakes were a unique menu item, offering a perfect balance of sweetness from the local blueberries and texture from the cornmeal. They’re a great choice if you want something different from the usual pancake experience.
The deep-fried-to-perfection Biscuit Beignets were light, fluffy, and served with housemade bourbon caramel glaze.
The Plain Fries and Hash Browns were nicely crispy. The Fried Mac N Cheese had a rich, creamy interior with a satisfying crunchy coating. We also tried the Biscuit with Marionberry jam, which was simple yet delicious.
While the location has an open window at the counter where you can view how they make the biscuits, photography and filming was not allowed.
Overall, a good visit to Pine State Biscuits and I would be interested to return again.
