House of Dosas is one Vancouver restaurant that is known for great late night eats and for being budget-friendly. They have been around for quite sometime now as their Yelp reviews date back to 2008. On Zomato, they are ranked within the top 3 most popular restaurants in the Kensington area. I had heard about their Monday special where all dosas are $5.99; this has been offered for many years now since the early days of the restaurant. Earlier this week, I made my to House of Dosas to indulge in their Monday special.
Here for the Food Only
When you go to House of Dosas, you’re really just going there for the food. The interior could be better maintained starting with the carpeted floor which was rather dirty. A thorough vacuuming is in order. Some of the chairs should be replaced as their seats were coming apart. The arrangement of the tables in their dining area seemed a bit cluttered as well.
House of Dosas Monday Menu
All dosas on Monday are $5.99 and choices are aplenty including vegetarian, meat (beef, chicken, lamb), seafood and Chef’s Special. Also available are appetizers, uttappams, curries, side orders and desserts.
What We Tried
My husband and I ordered 3 dosas to share because at $6 each it didn’t seem like too much to have another one. We went with the paneer masala dosa, lamb vindaloo dosa, and beef dosa.
In general, the crepes were very delicious being thin, crispy and not overly greasy. The filling to crepe ratio was good and the filings were oh-so flavourful. I might even say that they have the best dosas I have tasted in this city; this is in comparison to Chutney Villa and Canra Srilankan.
The vegetarian paneer masala dosa had nicely, firm cubes of tofu in a flavourful gravy.
The lamb vindaloo had a serious spicy kick to it for sure. You could see the use of red peppers in the fillings.
The beef dosa had chunky though tender pieces of beef. The portions of beef in the filling was more than I expected.
Overall Impression of House of Dosas
The dosas at House of Dosas were stellar though the setting for dining-in wasn’t quite so. I’m planning to return to try more of their dosas. And since they have so many varieties I guess I’ll have to revisit multiple times. My favourite was the vegetarian paneer masala dosa but they were all quite good. I would pay $10 for each dosa so $5.99 is a really good deal. Rating: 4.5/5
