Now Closed? Hanoi Bistro on Davie

While it is exciting to hear about new and upcoming restaurants, it is also sad to learn about ones that have closed.  Such is the case of Hanoi Bistro, a casual Vietnamese eatery located near Davie and Thurlow.  Their entire menu was MSG-free and they had unique meat offerings including elk, bison and even kangaroo kebabs.  Just last month, they had celebrated their one year anniversary. Today, I passed by Hanoi Bistro and noticed that the storefront was papered up without any signage indicating if they were closed for renovations or permanently closed.  Their Facebook page did not have any announcements either.

I visited Hanoi Bistro a few months ago for lunch and was hoping to return to round out my review.  But alas, in the ultra-competitive restaurant industry, restaurants sometimes do close before I get the chance to put up my review.

When I visited them a while back ago, the restaurant seemed pretty minimal in design but clean.  The area at the front of the restaurant was bright and seemed like a better place for eating compared to their other dining area at the back which was rather dark.  At that time, I simply had a grilled lemongrass chicken banh mi ($5.50) which came with picked daikon, carrots, cucumber, jalapeno, and mayo.

It was the first banh mi that I have had which came with jalapeno; pretty interesting to have a spicy kick with it.  The toasted baguette was somewhat crispy on the outside and fluffy and airy on the inside.  It was a good grilled lemongrass chicken banh mi but not the best in the area I would say.

Overall Impression of Hanoi Bistro

All in all, it was an okay dining experience an Hanoi Bistro.  I only had one item and planned to return, but I guess that isn’t the case anymore.  Rating: 3/5

That's a shame! They were in North Vancouver before they moved and were really amazing. Their location was a tiny hole in the wall and just had two employees(some other Vietnamese restaurant moved in there and is terrible). It went down a little in quality but was still delicious once they moved. What is weird is that they didn't announce anything. When they moved to Davie they had signs in the restaurant and on their FB.
