BC Greenhouse Veggie Days celebrates the annual springtime arrival of locally grown greenhouse veggies from BC‘s 37 Greenhouse Growers located throughout the Lower Mainland. During the long, dreary winter months, BC greenhouses are full of activity as new seedlings mature into ripe crops. With the arrival of spring, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce and more are harvested and arriving in stores. They prove that greenhouses are the ultimate chef’s tool as they allow you to produce so many nutiritious and delicious ingredients, so if you enjoy cooking you should seriously consider investing in one yourself.
Want to learn more about BC Greenhouses? Free greenhouse public tours for BC Greenhouse Veggie Days will be held on Saturday, May 5 from 10am – 2pm! These will be held at Westcoast Vegetables (3975 46A St, Delta), Sunnyside Produce (1133 176 St, Surrey) and Gravis Farms (4653 Bell Rd, Abbotsford).
Yesterday I attended a greenhouse to plate longtable dinner hosted by BC Greenhouse Growers’ Association inside a greenhouse at Glenwood Valley Farms in Langley. Guests included BC greenhouse growers, colleagues, media and influencers.
Valley Weddings did a phenomenal job with the decor for the dinner while Ryan McAllister provided pretty guitar strums and singing throughout the evening.
Chefs Matthew Nichols and Jeff Massey of Restaurant 62 – the top fine dining restaurant in the Fraser Valley – crafted delicious, greenhouse-to-table plates for guests to indulge in. The menu featured BC Greenhouse grown vegetables.
To start, we enjoyed a roasted red pepper bisque with jalapeno frites, spiced green pepper, and marinated Fraser Valley pork belly.
There was also a refresh salad featuring tomatoes, mini cukes, and pickled sweet peppers with whipped mozzarella.
Next, we had a few family-style entrees. There was the roasted whole Maple Hill Farms chicken with zucchini, tomato and coloured sweet pepper ratatouille.
The crisp zucchini and bell pepper fritters with parmesan dust and truffle were absolutely scrumptious.
We also enjoyed a grilled pepper and new potato salad with braised beef, dijon, scallions, and Mt. Lehman feta.
For dessert, attendees indulged in a lemon-scented custard with rhubarb compote, toasted coconut, and honey oat crumble.
