“The Rainbow Cone” is a beloved Chicago institution that has been delighting locals and tourists alike for generations.
More than just a delicious ice cream treat, it’s a taste of Chicago’s sweet history; a symbol of the city’s culinary creativity; and the enduring traditions that make Chicago a unique and welcoming place.
I visited their Magnificent Mile kiosk co-located with Gino’s East Pizza at 162 E Superior St in Chicago.

A Sweet and Colorful History
The Rainbow Cone first opened its doors in 1926, in Chicago’s south side neighborhood of Beverly. Its founder, Joseph Sapp, introduced an ice cream cone like no other.

Sapp’s creation consisted of five distinct ice cream flavors, all stacked one on top of the other in ice cream “slices”, forming a vibrant and delicious rainbow.

These flavors include Chocolate, Strawberry, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts), Pistachio, and Orange Sherbet.
Balanced Flavors
Each layer complements the one above and below it, creating a harmonious symphony of tastes in every bite.

The Chocolate layer provides a rich, creamy foundation, followed by the fruity sweetness of Strawberry.
The Palmer House flavor adds a vanilla yet earthy twist, while the Pistachio layer is delightfully nutty and the Orange Sherbet provides a refreshing citrus kick.
Together, they create a taste sensation that’s both nostalgic and unique.

The cone is available in “Baby” or “Original” Size. The Original is priced at $5.69.

A Summer Tradition
The Rainbow Cone has become synonymous with summertime in Chicago.
From its original Beverly location to its current homes in multiple locations throughout the city, this sweet treat has continued to draw long lines of eager customers, all waiting for a taste of this iconic dessert.
For Chicagoans, a visit to The Rainbow Cone is a cherished tradition that harkens back to their childhood, and for visitors, it’s a delicious introduction to the city’s unique food culture.

Expanding the Rainbow
While the original Beverly location is a cherished gem, you can now find this delightful treat at various locations throughout Chicago, including Navy Pier and suburban locations. They recently also expanded to a location in Florida.
A Taste of Chicago’s Sweet History
So, if you find yourself in Chicago during the hot summer months or even during the chilly winters (yes, The Rainbow Cone is open year-round), make sure to visit one of their locations. Taste the rainbow and experience a sweet, colorful slice of Chicago’s culinary heritage.

Those of us living near the Beverly original rainbow cone affectionately(?!) referred to the cone eating patrons as ‘Coneheads’!
