Straight and Marrow, an intimate eatery in East Vancouver (Canada), has a wonderful seasonally inspired menu featuring unique dishes showcasing the restaurant’s “nose-to-tail” culinary philosophy. Chef/Owner Chris Lam is brilliant at using often overlooked or little-known ingredients.
We enjoyed a fun and delicious date night at Straight and Marrow. In fact, I’ve just added them to my roundup of Best Date Night Spots in Vancouver.
Here’s what we tried and we recommend all of them!
Escargot Toast – Crimini & Oyster Mushrooms, Port Cream Sauce, Toast Points, Leek Ash. Lots of earthy flavours from the mushrooms along with a buttery toast and a creamy sauce.
Bone Marrow – Pickled Shiitake, Porcini Dust, Chicken Cracklin’. A fun dish where you scrap off the bone marrow and toppings and enjoy it with a toast.
Kim Chowder Gnocchi – Clams, Oyster Crackers, Pancetta. This dish is reminiscent of a typical clam chowder with oyster crackers but with a twist.
Frog ‘N Grits – Creamy Polenta, Garlic Scapes, Creole Sauce, Lardons. My favourite of the evening with some wonderful crispy frog bites in a creamy polenta.
Hoof Wing and Fin Mille Feuille – Puff Pastry, Chicken Liver Mousse, Fish Sauce Caramel, Duck Fat Icing Sugar. A sweet and savoury dessert with perfect puff pastry layers and a delicious chicken liver mousse.
Straight & Marrow Cocktail – Marrow Infused Brandy, Benedictine, Beef Stock, Red Wine, Lemon, Orange, Black Pepper Cardamon Bitters. Their signature cocktail featuring beef stock and red wine!
Teacher Becomes Student – Cacao Gin, Green Chartreuse, Coconut, Mint, Whole Egg, Fresh Nutmeg.
We really enjoyed all of Chef’s creativity in designing these dishes which were interesting and delicious and left us wanting more.
