If you’re coming into Oakridge Mall from the Cambie entrance, you will have likely passed by Original Cupcakes. Original Cupcakes was founded by Heather and Lori, two women from BC who had been best friends since high school. Their first bakery was on Denman and has expanded to 8 other locations in BC and one in Toronto. A single classic cupcake is $3.50, deluxe cupcakes are $4.50 and a “big one” is $10. Mini cupcakes are sold for 6 for $10.
Their branding presents them as girly and cute.
What I Tried
Through their social media contests, I had won a few cupcakes to try including one regular-sized cupcake and a set of mini cupcakes. The pictures below are of the cupcakes after I transported them home by transit which resulted in them being slightly damaged. The cupcakes most certainly looked better in store before I rough-handled them so to speak. But for what it’s worth, I just wanted to say a few words on the flavour of the cupcakes.
The last time I had their cupcakes, I found them to very moist and fluffy in texture but artificial in taste. However, the Key Lime cupcake this time around really takes the cake. One bite into the cupcake made me not want to continue at all. Great presentation (while it lasted) with the candy lemon on top but the flavour was just too strong.
The mini cupcake seemed for fare better because you can intake the sweetness and flavour in smaller doses. I largely was unable to finish the set of cupcakes.
Overall Impression of Cupcakes
I really wanted to like Cupcakes but that just didn’t seem to be the case. Their cupcakes have a very cute presentation, but that’s about it. Unfortunately, it’s more style over substance. Rating: 2.5/5
