McDonald’s Canada is marking the 30th anniversary of the McFlurry with a summer campaign rooted in their Atlantic Canadian origins. Invented in 1995 by franchisee Ron McLellan in Bathurst, New Brunswick, the McFlurry has since become a global dessert staple, served in 99 countries.
This summer, Canadians can celebrate with two limited-time flavours: the Birthday Cake McFlurry, featuring vanilla soft serve, confetti cookie dough, and birthday cake syrup, and the Cheesecake McFlurry, which includes a choice of Strawberry, Fudge, Caramel, or Oreo toppings. Each McFlurry is made with 100 percent Canadian dairy.

The campaign, titled An East Coast Original, also includes a regional art initiative. Seven East Coast artists were commissioned to create McFlurry-inspired pieces across mediums including painting, rug hooking, stained glass mosaic, and wood sculpture. This tribute reflects the dessert’s Bathurst origins and highlights the cultural identity of Atlantic Canada.
The McFlurry was first introduced with six flavours: Oreo, Smarties, Coffee Crisp, Crispy Crunch, SKOR, and Fudgee-O. Oreo remains one of the most requested options worldwide. As part of the summer promotion, McDonald’s Canada will introduce another new McFlurry flavour later in the season, available while supplies last.
