Katsu San in Richmond (BC Canada) is a Chef-owned and operated, local eatery specializing in Japanese pork cutlet sets and ramen.

Specializing in Pork Cutlets
Their pork cutlets are Koji (rice malt) -cured for 62 hours to maximize taste and juiciness.

The crumb coating for the katsu is made from housemade bread crumbs for an airy crunch. All sauces are also made in-house.
They use Sakura pork which have a rich texture and taste due to being fed a vegetable grain diet.
Katsu San Menu
Their small and focused menu features katsu sets (pork, chicken, shrimp) and a select number of ramens. The katsu sets are around $20 – $25 while the ramens are around $18.
What We Tried
We visited Katsu San for lunch and here is what we tried:
First was their Assorted Tonkatsu Set featuring 1/2 order of Pork Loin Katsu; 2 pieces of Cheese Katsu; and 1 piece of Ebi Prawn Katsu.

The katsu set came with fresh wasabi, grinded sesame seeds, house made tonkatsu sauce, house made apple onion sauce, house made tartar sauce, japanese pickles.

You also get unlimited shredded cabbage.
The pork katsu so tender and the crumb coating was wonderfully airy and crispy.
We also had the Ra-Ya Champon Ramen which is a chicken soup based ramen with spicy red chili pepper oil; pork belly; seafood like clams and mussels; and an egg.

The ramen was also very good with al dente noodles, spicy flavourful broth and a good amount of seafood and vegetables.
We also enjoyed their housemade Japanese Curry which was hearty and delicious.

I hadn’t been to Katsu San for a few years but the food is even better than my last visit so it seems like they have refined their recipes even more!
Interior & Vibe
They are a busy, small business with a high demand so there is a dine-in time limit of one hour.
