Text a provocative produce emoji to donate to Greater Vancouver Food Bank

This holiday season, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB) has launched Canada’s first emoji-to-donate campaign to help raise funds for healthy food for its members and agency partners.  And they’re using the eggplant and peach—the world’s most provocative produce—to bring the campaign to life in a fun, tongue-in-cheek way.

For every $1 donated, GVFB can purchase almost $3 of fresh, high-quality food and produce, making a small donation go a long way.

Texting an eggplant emoji to 30333 will donate $5, and texting a peach emoji to the same number will donate $10.  The feature only works for Canadian mobile providers and donations will be added to mobile phone bill.  The GVFB worked with the Mobile Giving Foundation and Rethink Canada to develop the project.

The Food Bank doesn’t accept perishable donations from the public, but they do have a direct relationship with farmers and other suppliers to buy fresh produce and other wholesome food with donated funds. This allows them to provide the items they need most to those most in need.

More monetary gifts will hopefully reduce the amount of expired and damaged food donations — the GVFB spent around $25,000 in 2018 to depackage and dispose of unsuitable donations.

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank hopes the emoji-to-donate campaign will increase donations throughout the year, but especially during this 2018 holiday season.
