Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub – Whistler

My first visit to Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub was in 2012 when we went there for some après-ski comfort food.  Located at the Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside, the Dubh Linn Gate serves traditional Irish pub fare as well as draft and craft beers.  My recollection of their food was that it was so incredibly hearty, delicious, and satisfying.  It was the perfect food to comfort a tired body after a day in the mountain.  Other customers around us were just having drinks and I remember them staring at the mouthwatering dishes on our table.

Hearty Irish Fare (2012)

At that time, we tried the steak and Guinness pie, one of their signature dishes.  It had certified Angus beef, vegetables, and mushrooms in a rich Guinness gravy.  The pie crust was wonderfully buttery and flaky and the meat was flavourful.

We also ordered the chicken panini with goat cheese, roast garlic mayo, arugula and caramelized balsamic onions on grilled Ciabatta bread.  The panini was perfectly toasted and was melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Last but not least was the lamb stew served with potatoes, soda bread.  It was so cozy, flavourful, delicious and it warmed my body on that cold winter night.

What We Tried (2015)

Fast forward to 2015 for a summer visit to Whistler, and I was keen to return to the Dubh Linn Gate to indulge in their pub food again.

I loved the steak and Guinness Pie last time, so I had to order it again ($19).  We had a hearty bowl of clam chowder with Arctic clams, Yukon gold potatoes, bacon and herbs (+$3) as the side. The pie did not disappoint and was tender and flavourful in the Guinness-spiked broth.

On Sundays, the Dubh Linn Gate has a slow cooked special ($24).  The day we were there it was the rack of lamb with lamb merguez, kale, romanesco and carrot mash.  The presentation of the dish was beautiful with warm colours.  I loved the melt-in-the mouth, slip off the bone lamb meat.  The vegetables and merguez had tons of flavour from the lamb juices.

We also sat out on the patio and enjoyed the view of the mountain.

Service

My only issue with the restaurant is that the service is a bit slow.  I remember it being slow on my last visit a few years ago, and it was as well on my recent experience.  It took a while for the server to get us the bill and to process the payment.

Overall Impression

I am so glad to hear that the Dubh Linn Gate is opening a location in Vancouver this summer.  It would be nice to indulge in their food locally since my visits to their Whistler restaurant were three years apart.  For some hearty comforting Irish pub fare, I recommend the Dubh Linn Gate.  The food is so rich and satisfying that you will definitely be wanting more.
