Weekday Brunch at Catch 122 in Gastown

I love a good weekday brunch and Catch 122 is just the place to get one.  This popular eatery in Gastown serves up some contemporary Canadian-inspired comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Catch 122’s interior is fitting for being in historical Gastown:  it’s industrial-chic, cozy yet still inviting.  You’ll find exposed brick walls, industrial lights, wood pallet accents, a large bar and custom wooden tables.  My husband and I recently ventured to Catch 122 on a weekday right before the end of their brunch service at 4 pm.

Catch 122 Brunch

Catch 122 serves brunch Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and weekends from 9 am to 4 pm.  All brunch items are $13 like eggs benedict, truffle-scented mushroom omelette and bacon porridge.  Sweeter brunch items like French toast and Belgian waffles are $12.  There are also sandwiches, salads, brunch cocktails and a kid’s menu.

What We Tried

We ordered the following brunch items:

  • Chorizo hash ($13)
  • Bread pudding French toast ($12)
  • Duck confit poutine ($10)

To start, the chorizo hash was a very comforting dish with eggs, house-made chorizo sausage, green kale, goat cheese, and a yukon nugget potato hash.  The kale balanced out the sweet and spicy flavours of the diced chorizo.  The potatoes were nicely crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  Great flavours overall.

The Bread pudding French toast was so much YUM!  The dish was nicely warm when it arrived at our table.  The toast was wonderfully moist and fluffy while the maple blueberry was just drool-worthy.  The toasted oats gave the dish a nice crunch texture.  Whipped cream came on the side but was quickly consumed with the French toast.  It’s a sweet dish but not too sweet – just right, really.  I would love to have this again.

Unfortunately, the duck poutine was not as impressive as the other dishes.  The cheese curds were not melted enough and the poutine could have used more gravy.  I did find the duck pieces to be nicely tender.  My thoughts on this dish are similar to those expressed by Hanson on his last visit over a year ago.

Service

Our server was terrific.  He explained all our dishes, very attentive and very friendly.  Gold star!

Overall Impression of Catch 122

All in all, I really enjoyed the brunch items that we tried.  I’d have the chorizo hash and French toast again and would recommend others to try them.  In contrast, I’d say skip the duck poutine.  The cozy, rustic atmosphere was very nice as well.  Rating: 4/5
