The Tonga Room at the Fairmont Hotel San Francisco is a unique and nostalgic destination offering an unforgettable experience of Polynesian-inspired ambiance, Tiki cocktails, and live entertainment.

Anthony Bourdain once declared the Tonga Room as “the greatest place in the history of the world.”

The Tonga Room’s History
The Tonga Room has a rich history dating back to 1945 when it first opened its doors. Originally the Fairmont Hotel’s indoor swimming pool, the Tonga Room was transformed into a tiki paradise.

Over the years, it has become a beloved institution, attracting locals and tourists alike with its one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
Tropical Oasis in the Heart of the City
As you step into the Tonga Room, you are transported to a bygone era of tiki culture.
The interior is adorned with tiki statues, bamboo accents, thatched roofs, and a lagoon with floating stages.
The ambiance is enhanced by the sound of rain falling from the ceiling, creating an immersive tropical oasis in the heart of the city.

Menu
The Tonga Room’s beverage program boasts an array of Polynesian-inspired drinks served in decorative mugs and bowls.
Whether you’re sipping on a classic Mai Tai or indulging in a Scorpion Bowl with friends, the Tonga Room’s mixologists ensure a memorable drinking experience.

We had the 1944 Mai Tai (Jamaican Rum, Trinidadian Rum, Dry Curacao, Orgeat, Lime) in a freshly cored pineapple.

The culinary offerings complement the tropical theme with a menu featuring Pacific Rim-inspired dishes. Here are the items we tried:
Tonga Pupu Platter
Fried Vegetable Spring Rolls, Ahi Tuna Poke Tostadas, Chili Pepper Chicken Wings, House Made Spam, Edamame

Coconut Curry Seafood
Prawns, Calamari, Scaloop, Yellow Curry, Kaffir Lime Leaf, Thai Chili, Cilantro, Mussels

Pork Baos

Tonga Grilled Ribeye
Oyster Sauce Glaze, Charred Purple Yam, Grilled Asparagus, Coriander

Chocolate Kahlua Mousse
Salted Caramel Sauce, Macadamia Nut Tuile

In my honest opinion, the food and drinks are on the pricier side (drinks around $20 and main entrees around $30 – $50) and they tasted average.
Live Entertainment
Guests are treated to performances by a talented band that takes to the floating stage in the middle of the lagoon.
The musical repertoire spans from classic tunes to contemporary hits, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
The occasional thunder and lightning effects add a theatrical touch to the performances, making the experience even more immersive.

Visiting the Tonga Room
If you’re planning to visit the Tonga Room, it’s advisable to make reservations, especially during peak hours. The dress code is casual, but many patrons choose to embrace the tropical theme.

Overall Impression
Despite the pricier food and beverages, we would recommend checking out The Tonga Room for a unique tropical escapade in San Francisco.
