Mochinut is a chain in the US that specializes in Mochi Donuts.
Mochi donuts are a delicious hybrid between mochi and the American donut; they feature a unique texture that is soft and fluffy at first bite but then transforms into a chew similar to that of mochi.
These donuts were popularized in Japan from the Mister Donut brand and feature a “pon de ring” shape which consists of a connected circle of 8 dough balls.
We visited the Sacramento location of Mochinut.
The mochi donuts flavors available on the day of my visit were Tiramisu; Circus Animal; Black Sesame; Samoas; Churro and Original Glaze.
Also on the menu are Korean Rice Flour Hotdogs (with choice of hot dog or mozzarella filling along with toppings sauce like crispy ramen and cheddar cheese) and Bubble Tea Drinks (like Thai Tea and Matcha).
I got a flaming hot Cheetos Korean hot dog; ube drink and Circus Animal mochi donut. They were all pretty indulging which is OK for a once-in-a-while sort of thing.
The mochi donut was probably the best of the items we tried. Good to stick with their original offerings. I think the ube drink was too sweet and too artificial tasting; I probably wouldn’t order it again. Better to go to a proper boba spot.
I’d be interested to try more of their mochi donuts in the future but not so much the other items.
