Grounds for Coffee is a longstanding Vancouver gem that recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. Established in 1993, Grounds for Coffee was at the forefront of Vancouver’s emerging coffee culture at that time. They are famously known for their handmade cinnamon buns which are sold at their cafe and various establishments in BC and Alberta. I was recently invited to try out their speciality Birthday cinnamon buns ahead of their anniversary celebration.

Point Grey Neighbourhood
Grounds for Coffee is located in the Point Grey neighbourhood, with free three-hour parking in surrounding residential areas. It is also conveniently located by Alma transit Stop for the 99 B-line which is also serviced by the 9 Alma, 14 UBC and 7 Dunbar.
Famous Cinnamon Buns
Grounds for Coffee’s famous cinnamon buns are made fresh daily by hand using locally-sourced ingredients. Apparently, each one is a little diva that cannot be rushed! The dough they use is made from choice Canadian flours, fermented to precise standards, then assembled, rolled, measured, cut and separated by hand.
You’ll be happy to know that they are made without trans fats, hydrogenated oils, eggs, bleached flour, nuts, raisins or preservatives. Finally, the buns are baked with a high level of control for moisture, iced with vanilla-bean cream-cheese icing and served at peak freshness.
Fun Fact: Grounds for Coffee cinnamon buns are sold wholesale to various establishments in BC and Alberta. Chances are that you have had a Grounds for Coffee cinnamon bun without knowing it.
Grounds for Coffee Menu
Cinnamon buns are sold as a single ($3.95), a 4-pack ($13.80) and 6-pack ($17.70). What’s better way to enjoy a cinnamon bun than with a nice cup of coffee? They offer a variety of espresso-based drinks in hot and cold varieties. The coffee they serve uses 100 percent premium organic Arabica coffee beans, with at least 50 percent of our coffee sourced free trade at any given time.
What I Tried
I had their limited edition Birthday cinnamon buns featuring vanilla icing and sprinkles on top. These are the kind of treats that are worth every calorie…soft, gooey, crispy and chewy on the edges. The bread is wonderfully butter and not overly dense.
Overall Impression
The Grounds for Coffee Cinnamon Bun was tasty from start to finish. Best to enjoy it with a cup of coffee to cut down on the sweetness. Be sure to check their social media to see what feature flavour is available. Rating: 4/5
