Review: Burger King BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich

Earlier this summer, Burger King Canada introduced the new BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich.  The sandwich is a limited offer and is part of the 2 for $5 Mix & Match” promotion.  The 2 for $5 deal includes other choices like Chicken sandwich (spicy or original) and Big Fish (spicy or original).  It seems like a reasonable fast food deal where each sandwich is only $2.50.

Burger King BBQ Pulled Pork

Burger King describes this new sandwich as having “tender chunks of slow roasted pulled pork smothered in a sweet BBQ sauce, topped with crisp white onions and crunchy pickles on a toasted sesame seed bun”.  In terms of nutrition, each BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich contains 390 calories, 9 grams of fat, 55 grams of carbs, and 22 grams of protein.

While returning home from vacation in the Okanagan, we stopped by a Burger King in Chilliwack.  I went for the 2 for $5 deal and had an BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich and an original Big Fish.

As for the taste, the Burger BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich was a disappointment.  The meat was rather mushy and the BBQ sauce was overwhelmingly sweet without much spiciness or smokiness  The onions and pickles were just okay – reasonably fresh and crunchy.  The best part of the sandwich was actually the bun which was dense yet soft and tasted less artificial than your usual fast food burger bun.  A lot closer to an “artisan” bun.

As for the Big Fish, it isn’t a new menu item but the first time I have tried it.  The burger is made with 100% Alaskan Pollock fillet topped with tartar sauce and shredded lettuce on a bun.  It contains 490 calories, 26 grams of fat, 49 grabs of carbs, and 16 grams of protein.  The panko breading on the fillet was reasonably crispy but the fillet itself was very bland.  The lettuce was horrendous and didn’t look all that fresh and appetizing.

Between the two sandwiches, the Big Fish is the better tasting one.  I wouldn’t order the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich ever again and definitely would not recommend it.  As for this Burger King location in Chilliwack, I found the staff to be friendly and the restaurant appeared clean in general.  This location is especially nice for kids because they have a very tall, multi-level play structure.
