History
Since it disappeared from the A&W menu in 2017, there’s one legacy item that fans have been committed to getting back: The Whistle Dog.
The Whistle Dog is a true A&W classic that was beloved by Canadians for decades. While it was available, it grew such a dedicated following.
Since its departure, Whistle Dog fans have started petitions, written songs, rallied support on the radio, and filled up A&W’s comment sections on social media, all in an attempt to bring the iconic hot dog back.
Take one fan in Manitoba for instance – a dedicated Whistle Dog warrior that went out of his way to comment on every single A&W Instagram post since 2021 saying, “Bring back the Whistle Dog!”
Then there’s a Calgary morning radio show host who even started an online petition to get the Whistle Dog back.
The insane fan demand for the Whistle Dog has now been immortalized in film as A&W is accompanying the Whistle Dog’s comeback with an 18-minute short film documentary called “Bring Back The Whistle Dog.”
The film chronicles five Canadian Whistle Dog warriors and the lengths they’ve gone to bring the menu item back. Originally slated to be released in 2022, plans for the documentary’s original release in 2022 was even halted due to the Whistle Dog’s scarcity that year.
When A&W reintroduced the menu item in 2022 as a limited time offer, the company underestimated the item’s popularity and how quickly it would sell out. Certain locations in Canada sold out in a matter of two days! The Whistle Dog marks A&W’s fastest-selling limited-time offer in history.
Review
I tried the Whistle Dog for the first time and thought it was delicious! The sausage was quite juicy, tender and perfectly cooked. The toasted bun was really soft and fluffy. It was a bit different to have the sausage cut down the middle almost like a stuffed sausage but overall I would recommend giving the Whistle Dog a try.

I made six of these for my family at home for the $8.04 it would have cost for one at A&W.
No thanks.
