Newly opened at Grizzli Winery in West Kelowna is their onsite restaurant, 31 CHARKAY. Chef Tye has created a menu that reflects his identity, building on his Indigenous heritage and refined techniques from his background of being trained in a French kitchen for 10+ years.
The restaurant was inspired by Grizzli Winery owner Amy Chang’s grandmother’s address. The menu of this Canadian contemporary restaurant pays homage to the cultural diversity of our beautiful country.
We visited 31 CHARKAY for dinner and here is what we tried:
Mediterranean Bannock
Indigenous fry bread, pesto, goat cheese, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, arugula
Beef Carpaccio Salad
Mung bean glass noodles, red chilli, cashews, mint, basil, sweet soy dressing
Fried Chicken Bites
Five spice seasoning, seasonal vegetables, spiced apricot sauce
Helen’s Pink Pasta
Beet infused semolina bucatini, seafood medley, creamy white wine and dill reduction
Chimichurri New York Steak
Grilled 8oz strip loin steak, balsamic reduction, roasted cherry tomatoes, beets and taro chips
Red & White
Vanilla ice cream drowned in 1.5oz Grizzli Cabernet Franc Red Icewine
I really enjoyed Chef Tye’s modern and approachable menu reflecting the different cultural makeup of Canada. I liked the different twists in the dishes like the Mediterranean flavours for the Bannock; using glass noodles and sweet soy dressing with the Beef Carpaccio Salad; and the spiced apricot sauce with the five-spiced seasoned Fried Chicken Bites were delish. The dessert with vanilla ice cream in icewine was a nice finish.
The restaurants is bright, spacious, cozy with a mix of dining tables, large round tables and lounge seating.
While you are there, I would recommend a private wine tasting experience at the property’s wine bar/art gallery.
