One of the best places to relish the San Francisco skyline is at the Top of the Mark. This iconic, upscale cocktail bar located on top of the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel boasts a blend of history as well as panoramic views of the city from the 19th floor.

The origins of this bar began in 1939, when the owner of the hotel, George D. Smith, decided to transform the penthouse suite into a cocktail lounge with 360-degree views.

During World War II, service members would buy a bottle and leave it with the bartender, so that the next soldier from their squadron could enjoy the gift of a drink – and this tradition continues today with not only servicemen and veterans but also civilians to show appreciation.

One of the main draws of Top of the Mark is the unparalleled 360-degree view it offers of the city stretching from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge.

The lounge features a diverse menu of small plates, cocktails, and fine wines that cater to various tastes. on the menu are Grilled Shrimp Tacos; Short Rib Sliders; Ahi Tuna Tartare; Flatbreads and more.

To enhance your experience, the Top of the Mark often features live entertainment. Whether it’s a jazz band, a solo artist, or a DJ spinning tunes, the live music adds an extra layer of charm to your visit. As you sip your cocktail and savor your meal, the soothing melodies create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding.
At night, the mesmerizing twilight views are complemented by the sparkling bay and city lights, creating a magical and romantic atmosphere that’s perfect for a memorable evening.

During my visit, I found the clientele at Top of the Mark to be a diverse mix of locals and tourists. The decor also doesn’t seem to be very updated so you’ll find a touch of Old San Francisco there.
With its rich history, breathtaking views, delectable dining options, and live entertainment, it’s no wonder that this iconic sky lounge continues to be a beloved destination for both locals and visitors alike. So, whether you’re a San Francisco native or a traveler looking to make memories, don’t miss the opportunity to elevate your experience at Top of the Mark.
