San Francisco, renowned for its iconic landmarks, diverse culture, and culinary excellence, also boasts a timeless tradition that transports visitors to a bygone era—the cherished practice of afternoon tea.

Nestled in the heart of the San Francisco’s Union Square is Neiman Marcus, a luxury department store synonymous with sophistication and elegance.

More than just a shopping haven, the department store is home to one of the best afternoon tea experiences in the city.

Stepping into the Rotunda, the iconic restaurant within the store, you will be immediately captivated by its grandeur. The restaurant features a landmark architectural centerpiece that is a magnificent, elliptical stained-glass dome.

The rotunda and skylight ceiling are remnants of the former City of Paris department store. The stained glass dome tells the story of the Ville de Paris, the ship that transported the founders of City of Paris to San Francisco in 1850. In 1972, the store ceased operations, eventually finding a new owner in Neiman Marcus.

Adorned with a magnificent stained glass dome, the Rotunda creates an atmosphere of opulence and refinement, setting the stage for a truly memorable afternoon.
The afternoon tea experience starts off with Neiman Marcus’ signature offerings. There was the famous Neiman Marcus Popover—light and airy, and served with strawberry butter, creating a delicious contrast of flavors. Similar to English Yorkshire pudding.

Next came a warming bowl of the signature Neiman Marcus Chicken broth.
The afternoon tea was presented on tiers and including the following:
Savoury
- Coronation chicken salad croissant
- Beef pastrami with sweet pepper and whole grain mustard jam sandwich
- Cucumber and dill cream cheese sandwich
- Apple with smoked salmon and caviar over lemon butter

Scones served with orange marmalade, and lemon curd.
- Black currant scone
- Herb and gruyere scone

Sweets
- Lemon meringue tart
- Coffee crumb cake
- Sour cream cake with sweet whipped cream and strawberries
- Pistachio chou chou
- Waffle cone cups filled with white chocolate mousse and berries

The hallmark of Neiman Marcus’s afternoon tea experience is the impeccable service. Attentive and courteous, the staff caters to every need, creating an atmosphere of refined hospitality.

The afternoon tea was $54 per person at the time of my visit and I really enjoyed the quality and creativity of the items.
Afternoon tea at Neiman Marcus San Francisco is not just a meal; it’s a celebration of tradition, luxury, and culinary artistry. The Rotunda’s timeless charm, paired with the delectable offerings and exceptional service, elevates the experience to a level of sophistication that embodies the essence of San Francisco’s cultural richness.
I had a lovely experience and would recommend The Rotunda for afternoon tea in San Francisco!
