A&W Canada is expanding its partnership with Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue organization, to address the pressing issues of food waste and hunger across the country. Currently, 441 A&W restaurants are participating in the Second Harvest Food Rescue App program, which enables surplus food donations to be picked up by local non-profits, including food banks, shelters, and community centres.
Since the partnership began in 2021 with 81 participating locations, A&W has provided over 1.24 million meals to 987 non-profit organizations across Canada. Donated items, such as protein and produce, are transformed into nourishing meals for individuals experiencing food insecurity. This initiative highlights the potential to rescue 42% of Canada’s wasted food, which could feed the 8.7 million Canadians struggling with food insecurity.
A&W CEO Susan Senecal emphasized the program’s impact, stating, “Our core purpose is to feed people, and this program allows us to extend that to those facing hunger.”
The collaboration reflects A&W’s commitment to sustainability and community support, showcasing how strategic partnerships can create a meaningful impact in addressing food insecurity.
