Afternoon tea takes a spooky turn at Notch8 Restaurant & Bar at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

I had a great time at the Haunted Cellar Afternoon Tea where the eerie setting is filled with gothic portraits, skulls, potion bottles and a cauldron, with dim lighting casting an eerie glow across the room.

The three-tiered spread carries the Halloween theme through names like The Book of Shadows and Hocus Pocus. Roast beef finger sandwiches, smoked salmon croissants and sausage rolls with deep red beet ketchup sit alongside seasonal squash tarts and pumpkin croquettes.

Classic Buttermilk and Orange Cinnamon Scones come with mascarpone tea cream and apple strawberry jam.

The dessert tier features a little collection of enchanted sweets. Sorcerer’s Cauldron brings chocolate choux and raspberry mousse together, and Black Widow features black sesame shortbread, milk chocolate truffle and a web decoration. There is a dark chocolate tart with blood orange and cassis, a fig and honey mousse dessert, and a purple blackberry Earl Grey macaron.

For tea, seasonal choices include Pumpkin Spice, Apple Ginger Rooibos and Masala Chai. Children can join the spooky tea party with their own sandwiches, cookies, scones and treats.

Priced at $75 per adult and $40 per child ages 12 and under. Available October 21 through November 1, Wednesday through Sunday, with seatings at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.
