CA Bakehouse San Jose – European Pastries with Asian Flavours

CA Bakehouse is a family-owned and operated bakery in San Jose Vietnam Town. They are best known for their Green Waffle which acquires its distinct green color from fresh pandan leaves.

On their menu are Portuguese Egg Tarts (Chinese and Portuguese inspired egg tart made with handmade puff dough for a buttery and flaky crust with a not too sweet custard); Choux Pastries (similar to cream puffs but are made with delicate pastry dough to get its airiness and soft crunch); Mochi Cakes (lightly sweet and spongy in the inside and crunchy on the outside); Croissants; Milk Breads; Basque Cheesecakes (with a creamy center and a deeply caramelized “burnt” top); and more.

I tried their Kaya Croissant; Kaya Choux; Pandan Green Waffle; Ube Choux; Ube Croissant; Guava Mochi Cake; and Durian Portuguese Egg Tart which were beautifully crafted and delicious!

My favourites were the choux pastries which had the perfect crispy shell and a luscious filling. The fillings are not to sweet either but satisfying. The pandan has grassy vanilla flavor with a hint of coconut while the ube is earthier, nuttier with a hint of vanilla.

The croissants had a crispy exterior but the dough seemed a big heavier than a classic croissant. Perhaps they need the croissants to be a more rigid to hold the filling.

The Pandan Green Waffle is OK – you have to try it once at least but it’s just a waffle with some light pandan aromatics.

I would recommend ordering online to avoid the long line. Also, parking in the plaza is hit or miss, so you may need to do a few laps.

CA Bakehouse is located at 979 Story Rd Unit 7066, San Jose, CA.
