Whistler Eats: Mongolie Grill

Mongolie Grill Whistler Village Dinner Plate

On our recent family vacation to Whistler, I was eager to visit and revisit some foodie favourites in town.  But there is one place that I was eager to not go back to unfortunately – Mongolie Grill in Whistler Village.  To give you the gist of it, the food is just expensive for what you get.  In this post, I’m going to share a throwback review on Mongolie Grill from my visit in 2013.

I was in Whistler for a conference and some colleagues and I decided to take a break from “conference food” and visit a restaurant in the Village.  We conservatively chose Mongolie Grill because of our positive experiences from other Mongolie Grills in Vancouver.  If you haven’t been to Mongolie Grill, the concept is pretty straightforward.  There is an ingredient table where you pick your own vegetables, meat, seafood and sauce.  Your bowl will then be weighed and then cooked before your very eyes by a chef.  It’s a neat spectacle to watch the food being cooked.

Your meal is charged by pound and is based on the pre-cooked weight of the bowl.  While I accept that food in Whistler Village is generally expensive, I really thought that Mongolie Grill’s price per pound was high.  They started with $17 per pound a few years back but now it’s gone up to $20 per pound.  All the ingredients shrink down after being cooked.  So, if you are really looking to be full from dining at Mongolie Grill, get ready to pay up.  It can easily be $30-$40 per person…on stirfry.

The ingredients that are offered are fresh and your bowl will probably taste pretty good.  Afterall, you did choose the ingredients.  I must admit that I did enjoy how everything tasted.  When I looked at other reviews online, I saw a common theme of people mentioning that they see Mongolie Grill as a”healthier option” compared to fast food.  Since you can choose your own ingredients, you could go all veggies if you really want to.

For anyone who still is considering visit Mongolie Grill, I would advise getting your money’s worth by getting mostly meat and sauce.  As for myself, I left hangry from my visit to Mongolie Grill after my $20 bowl and I won’t be revisiting again.  Rating: 2/5
