Cheap Eats at the Ikea Restaurant

If you have shopped at the Richmond Ikea before, chances are you probably have tried out the Ikea Restaurant.  It is hard to not be hungry after walking through the maze of showrooms.  The Ikea Restaurant is simply a *cheap* and convenient place to grab a snack or meal.  I must admit that the food tastes pretty good for the price.  In this post, I reflect my experiences at the Ikea Restaurant.

Dine on Ikea Furniture

The Ikea restaurant can be characterized as a chic and modern-designed cafeteria.

For your convenience, there is a cart that you can use to carry your tray.

There is no shortage of seating at the Ikea restaurant.  You will find plenty of seats for kids and highchairs for babies.

Swedish Meatballs

Ikea’s iconic food product are their Swedish meatballs.  Fortune magazine reported that Ikea sells *one billion* of their Swedish meatballs each year.  Now, that’s a whole lotta meatballs.

I first tried Ikea’s Swedish meatballs a few years ago around the time they had their grand opening of their bigger better Richmond store in 2012.

For the price of $4.99 in 2012, I got 10 meatballs with gravy, lingonberry jam, and fries.  The meatballs were somewhat flavourfu, tender, and reasonable for the price.

On our recent visit to Ikea, I got a kid’s meal ($2.99) for my son.  You had a choice of entrees but I decided on the meatball option.  It came with 5 meatballs and some fries and gravy.  Unfortunately, my son did not seem interested in the meatballs so my husband and I ended up finishing it.  It tasted pretty much the same as I had remember when I first tried them a few years ago.

Other Food

We also had the vegetable medallion ($0.99) consisted of potatoes, broccoli, leek, onions and cheese was a pretty good vegetarian option.

My husband and I shared the veggie balls with marinara sauce ($5.99)The veggie balls is a new healthier option at Ikea.  They are made of chickpeas, carrots, maize and kale.  The veggie meatballs were soft in texture but bland.  I personally like the Swedish meatballs more.  The broccoli was also flavourless, so I guess they really were going with healthy for this dish.

We also tried the princess cake which was a cream cake with raspberry and vanilla custard filling and coated with pink marzipan.  The filling had a lovely cream texture but the cream was generally too sweet for my liking.

Overall Impression of Ikea Restaurant

In summary, the Ikea restaurant has decent food for the price.  The iconic Swedish meatballs are still what I would order on my next visit.  The veggie meatballs are a healthier option, but I found them to be bland.  I would stay away from the princess cake which was overly sweet. Rating: 3.5/5
