Firebird Cafe is a newly opened restaurant serving Taiwanese cuisine at Continental Centre in Richmond.  I was invited by Chinesebites.com to try out this new eatery along with Nosh and Nibble’s, Hanson.

What We Tried

To start, we had a taro milkshake which was refreshing and has decent taro flavour.

The deep fried squid had a crispy on the outside with the meat somewhat tender.  Nicely seasoned.

Fried Squid

Next up are the two custom sizzling grills.  The first had chicken wings, double fried egg, and mashed potato; the second had a prawn skewer, ribeye steak and French Fries.  The chicken wings were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.  The eggs were nicely done.  I definitely felt like the ribeye steak was tough.  The fries were pretty standard ones you would get frozen at a grocery store.

The sizzling grills came with the soup of the day which was cream of mushroom with some diced pork.

Soup

The build-your-own laksa noodle soup was a hit at our table.  The broth had just the right balance of spice and coconut milk.

The baked pork chop and prawns with rice had decent portions of meat.  Lots of sauce and had an overall hearty, warm feeling.

Baked Firebird

The seafood curry with rice was flavourful though the texture was more on the thick side.  Presentation was more refined for this dish.  I also felt that there were decent portions of mussels, shrimp, and squid.

Curry Firebird

Last but not least, is the matcha soufflé thick toast which surprisingly came near the beginning of the meal.  It was buttery though more on the bitter side for taste.  I prefer the Japanese green tea fluffy thick toast from Pearl Castle located next door.

Service

Although this was a media dinner, the service was unfortunately lacking.  We struggled to get some extra plates and cutlery and if we needed something we would have to wave someone down.  The servers also did not make much of an effort to clear away our dishes.  When the dishes arrived at our table, they more or less just plopped them down and left.  I think there could have been more effort to rearrange the plates a bit more.

Overall Impression of Firebird Cafe

All in all, the meal at Firebird Cafe was just okay though service could use much improvement.  I thought that the laksa noodle soup was the most memorable and delicious dish.  Portions were fair for the price.  Rating: 3/5
