This year, Bubble Waffle Cafe has been named Best Food Stall as voted by diners for the Chinese Restaurant Awards.  There are four locations in Metro Vancouver: Crystal Mall, UBC, Aberdeen Centre and a new one at Royal Centre.  In this review, I will share with you my thoughts on the items I have tried from the Bubble Waffle Cafe.

Menu

Bubble Waffle Cafe serves up some Hong Kong-style street snacks including curry fish ball, bubble waffles, noodle combos,, rice rolls and chicken wings.  I noticed that this Aberdeen location is larger than the one at Crystal Mall.

They have signature noodle combos to choose from, but you can also build your own.  They provide a small form where you can check off your choice of soup base, noodle type and toppings.  A noodle with two toppings is $7.29 or $8.49 with a drink.  When you have a noodle combo, small snacks are slightly cheaper than when you order them stand-alone.  Bubble waffles are between $1.00 – $1.50 depending if you order a drink with the combo.  Other snacks like curry fish fall, takoyaki and Korean twisted potato are between $2.50 – $4.50.

What I Tried

At the Taste of Aberdeen event, I tried their regular bubble waffle.  It was actually one of my favourite items from the event.  It is hollow but nicely crispy on the outside.  I thought it was an interesting item to share with others since everyone could just break off a bubble to eat and I liked that it was not overly sweet.  It is also great that their bubble waffle is really bubble-shaped because I have had ones locally where the bubble waffle is flat on one side.  Lastly, their bubble waffle is simple but tasty; they do not offer elaborate toppings like at The BBT Shop.

I also tried the curry fish balls at the event – a familiar street food item in Hong Kong.  The ones we had from Bubble Waffle did not disappoint and were mildly spicy and very aromatic.

This past weekend, I bought a Korean twisted potato in sour cream and onion.  I had previously had one from their Crystal Mall location and thought it was pretty good.  The texture was not the crispiest but the sour cream and onion flavour was delicious.  There was a 15 minute wait for the order.

I did not try any of the noodle soup combos at this location, but at the Crystal Mall one last month.  I thought that they were filling and overall just okay.  For more, see my review here.

Overall Impression of Bubble Waffle Cafe

All in all, I quite liked the snacks from Bubble Waffle Cafe at Aberdeen Centre.  I most definitely recommend giving them a try.  Rating: 3.5/5
